I know that there are plenty of things you want to be doing during December, from baking cookies to watching Christmas movies, cuddling up by the fire and sipping hot cocoa, but I want to add one more thing to your to-do list: get a job.
Have you been discontent in your current position? Have you been thinking about looking for a new opportunity, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet? Well now is the time. Contrary to popular belief, this is a great time of year for hiring.
Many companies undergo budget refreshes as the new year rolls in, and with this comes new hiring budgets. Employers are definitely using this time to post those open positions they’ve been waiting to fill, and with everyone taking the holidays to relax or vacation, it is likely that by actively continuing your job search and filling out applications during this season you will stay ahead of the competition.
Additionally, the holidays are a prime time to network. With countless happy hours and cocktail parties, this is the season for making a new connection and leaving a lasting impression. Attend these events with intentional conversations in mind and a pocket full of refreshed personal business cards.
Don’t hesitate to also reach out and reconnect with old colleagues or acquaintances. The holiday season is a great time to revisit and expand your network.
Ask someone to catch up over coffee, then inquire about any open positions or planned expansions they might know of. If they’re company doesn’t have anything promising on the horizon, don’t be afraid to ask them if they know of any others they could get you connected with. It’s amazing how one connection can lead to another and another and another… until you’ve landed yourself your next gig.
Make sure that as you are on the job hunt this season you don’t get discouraged by the ‘out of office’ automated replies. Be persistent. Do your research on the company and the position, make a list of key people to reach out to and be bold.
At the very least, take the excess downtime during the holidays to update your resume, print some new business cards, and fix up your LinkedIn so you can hit the ground running in 2018.
